The League

Baseball is in full swing (the trade deadline is only a week away), the NBA’s offseason thus far has been a circus and the Summer Olympics are starting. Meanwhile I can’t stop reading about training camps.

I’m a slave to the shield.

A Different Kind of Bounty

Jay Glazer broke news that the Washington Redskins will send three first rounders (2012, ‘13 and ‘14) and this year’s second rounder to St. Louis for the second pick in the draft. It’s a steep price to pay, especially when discussing an unproven talent. The initial reaction is that the Redskins paid far too much. After all, Washington has a lot of holes not just at quarterback, However, you can see where they’re coming from. Take a look at the list of quarterbacks the Washington has started since Joe Theismann’s career ended:

Jay Schroeder
Ed Rubbert
Doug Williams
Mark Rypien
Rich Gannon
Cary Conklin
Heath Shuler
John Friesz
Gus Frerotte
Jeff Hostetler
Trent Green
Brad Johnson
Jeff George
Shane Matthews
Patrick Ramsey
Danny Wuerffel
Tim Hasselbeck
Mark Brunell
Jason Campbell
Todd Collins
Donovan McNabb
Rex Grossman
John Beck

They had a pair of Super Bowl MVP’s in Doug Williams and Mark Rypien but many more starters were aging players brought in at the tail end of their careers. Washington knows that if Robert Griffin III is what everyone says he is then they’ll be set for the next decade. Of course, the glaring problem is that there is just no way to tell.
